About Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

To impart computer education in State-run schools, the Punjab Government has begun implementation of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) project in High and Secondary schools since April 2005. The main aim of ICT is to impart computer education to all students of class VI to XII. The State Government had constituted an ICT Education Society under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary for independent monitoring and supervision of the implementation of the project on 17th Feb.2005. The main objective of the Punjab ICT Education Society (PICTES) is to administer the Information & Communication Technology (ICT) and MIS System for providing compulsory computer education to the students of government schools across the State. ICT project currently covers both Government and Government Aided Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools.  Financial assistance is provided for procurement of computers and peripherals, educational software, training of teachers, development of e-contents, Internet connectivity & set up of smart schools. district.

Major components of ICT Project are:

  1. The first one is providing computer aided education to Secondary and Higher Secondary Government and Government Aided schools.
  2. The second is the establishment of smart schools, which shall be technology demonstrators.
  3. The third component is teacher related interventions, such as provision for engagement of an exclusive teacher, capacity enhancement of all teachers in ICT and a scheme for national ICT award as a means of motivation.
  4.  Fourth one relates to the development of e-contents.

Highlights of ICT Project are:

  1. The objective of the Scheme is to cover all Government and Government Aided secondary and higher secondary schools by giving priority for early coverage of schools in educationally backward blocks.
  2. There is a provision of a suitably qualified full time computer teacher in each secondary and higher secondary school.  .
  3. Management, monitoring and evaluation will be strengthened.
  4. Convergence with the existing programme would be essential especially in teacher training and ensuring reliable power supply and internet connectivity.  
  5. For escalating Knowledge, another objective of the ICT Society is promoting and disseminating information Technology culture among existing teachers and students in the District so that the benefit of information technology can be percolated at the school level. There are provisions for in-service (induction and refresher) training for all teachers in secondary and higher secondary schools to enable them to impart ICT enabled teaching.
  6. The most important benefit from ICT in education is for improved learning outcomes. ICT has brought a range of new terms in the education like: e-learning, smart classrooms etc. This main objective is that  ICT will make learning and teaching much cheaper.
  7. Set up lab of modern lab with latest IT infrastrucure where students get the best IT training.
  8. Develop students competence as per NCERT and CBSE guidlines.
  9. Incorporate management information system (MIS) for monitoring and reviewing the project on the regular basis.
